The
Center for Research in Terminology and Translation (CRTT) of the
University of Lyon is organizing an international conference on neology
in specialized languages which will take place in Lyon on 2-3 July
2012. The aim of the conference is to bring together linguists
interested in discussing the following aspects of neology in
specialized communication:
- The methods and tools which are used to detect new terms and concepts
- The importance of written and oral corpora to detect new terms
-
The methods and tools which are used to measure and evaluate the
implantation of new terms in a specialized language and their
circulation to other specialized languages
- The influence of language policies on the implantation and
circulation of neologisms
- The diachronic evolution of neologisms
- The treatment of neologisms by general-purpose and specialized
dictionaries
We
are pleased to announce that Kyo Kageura, from the University of Tokyo,
and Jean Quirion, from the University of Ottawa, have accepted our
invitation to give keynote presentations at the conference.
Call for Papers:
Any
proposal exploring one of the listed themes from a theoretical or
practical standpoint and from a synchronic or diachronic perspective is
welcome. Papers must be original research and must not have already
been published or presented at a conference.
Papers may be given in French, English or Spanish.

Computational Linguistics Workshop on Austroniesian Languages is held
as part of 12ICAL at Udayana University (Denpasar Campus),
Bali,
Indonesia.
TOPICS
We invite the submission of papers on
original and unpublished research on various aspects of computational
linguistics and natural language processing for languages in the
Pacific and Oceanic regions.
Topics include, but not limited to:
•phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse;
•lexicography and computational lexicography;
•interpreting spoken and written language;
•natural language generation;
•linguistic formalisms and grammar engineering;
•engineering solutions for field linguists;

theme for the second annual Translation Winter School &
Festival is
TRANSLATION, TRANSNATION, giving emphasis to the connections between
transnational writing and the practice of translation. The event is
aimed at students, writers, professional translators, language teachers
and anyone interested in literary translation! A week-long residential
program of hands-on translation practice is accompanied by a number of
public talks and panel discussions addressing a wide range of topics,
as welll as networking opportunities. Daily translation workshops are
led by an expert translator and the author of the text to be
translated.

International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies is

place at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, from July 24th

The conference theme, Translation and the
Politics of Recognition, embraces a wide range of topics within
translation, interpreting and intercultural studies. Intending
participants can submit abstracts to the general conference or to any

Conference Theme
The
theme of the IATIS 2012 conference is: ‘Translation and the Politics of
Recognition’. This may be interpreted in a broad manner, embracing such

Fifth Conference of the International Society for Gesture Studies: The
communicative body in development

The
conference celebrates the tenth anniversary of the ISGS. Established in
2002, the ISGS is an international organization that gathers scholars
interested in gesture and bodily communicative behaviour, different
approaches to sign language, and communication in non-human species.
Through its biennial conference series the ISGS constitutes a meeting
place for researchers approaching the study of bodily communication
from a range of different perspectives.
The theme of the fifth
conference of ISGS is The Communicative Body in Development.
Development is to be understood broadly as any change, typical or
atypical, in bodily communicative behaviour across the lifespan,
synchronically or diachronically, onto- and phylogenetically, and
across species. The conference also welcomes all topics on bodily
communication, studied in all settings, and from all theoretical and
disciplinary perspectives.

La idea de organizar este simposio nace de la necesidad de reflexionar
sobre el dinamismo intercultural, sobre la geopolítica y sobre el papel
que juega la traducción en América Latina, específicamente,
en los estudios latinoamericanos, como un espacio de creación
estética, de comunicación intercultural y también de expresión
política. Este es el espacio en el que se despliega la
reflexión traductológica latinoamericana actual. Las miradas
hacia el intelectual americano quien, como parte de su praxis
narrativa, a menudo también traduce, son diversas. Si para el peruano
Vicente García Calderón el literato americano es un imitador, para el
colombiano Eduardo Caballero Calderón se trata de un "nuevo tipo
humano" y de un fenómeno de "mestizaje cultural". Por su parte, el
historiador colombiano Germán Arciniegas reflexiona sobre la
influencia que ha representado América para el desarrollo de
las ideas en Occidente. El uruguayo Ángel Rama coincide con este
enfoque al poner de manifiesto el carácter bidireccional y
"transculturador" de la narrativa y sus agentes, más exactamente del
letrado, en el continente americano. Podemos ver al traductor en el ojo
del huracán, por así decirlo, como agente social clave en
eventos de contacto cultural a lo largo de la historia americana. Por
lo tanto, la pregunta urgente para el estudio de la traducción y los
traductores de América Latina podría plantearse en los siguientes
términos: "¿Qué lugar ocupa la traducción en la construcción de una
conciencia latinoamericana?"
Solicitamos propuestas de ponencias que aborden esta temática desde
distintas
perspectivas, tales como:

TPR2012 - Second international PhD course on Translation Process Research

up on last year’s success, the CBS CRITT centre is offering the second
international PhD course in Translation Process Research (TPR) from
August 13 to 16. The course will focus on theoretical aspects of
translation process research, on experimental research design and
methodology, on data visualization and human translation modeling, and
on qualitative and quantitative data analysis. There will also be
frequent opportunities to consider issues arising in connection with
user interaction with language technological tools, particularly the
process of postediting machine translation output.
Following
the course, there will be an open workshop on Expertise in Translation
and Post-editing – Research and Application on August 17 and 18.
Participants are encouraged to participate in the workshop and may
contribute an abstract for presentation at the workshop. More

Since the first Nordic Prosody conference, which took place in 1978 in

International Conference on Dialogic Language Use 3: Miscommunication

Dialogic
Language Use 3 is the third international symposium in a series related
to dialogic language and phenomena associated with it. The symposium is
organized by the Modern Language Society in Helsinki, 15-17 August 2012
as part of the Society's 125th anniversary celebrations. This year's
theme is the darker side of dialogic language use: misunderstanding,
polemics, disagreement, swearing, insults, slander, and verbal hygiene.
We invite participants working in the fields of sociolinguistics,
translation studies, pragmatics, conversation analysis, discourse
analysis, and literary criticism, with both present-day and historical
perspectives. Possible research questions may include the following:

Do insults have a logic of their own? Are there patterns in individual
or collective ways of insulting? Is it possible to determine, for
example, the morphology of swearing, and the linguistic or discursive
structures of an insult? What does swearing represent in, for example,
literary texts?
- What recent developments can be traced in
linguistic studies of misunderstanding? Can communicative failure be
described schematically? How is misunderstanding represented in
different texts, such as textbooks, comics, and fiction?
- How has social media changed and influenced the study of these issues?
- What sort of ethical issues arise when these questions are explored?
- How does harsh language change in translation - or does it?
- How is the dichotomy between written and spoken language manifested
in the case of, for example, insults?

researchers and practitioners to a workshop on
Expertise in Translation and Post-editing Research and Application at
Copenhagen Business School
August 17 and 18, 2012
Computer
Assisted Translation (CAT) and Machine Translation (MT) technology are
modifying the translation profession. However, it is unclear where this
development leads and how translation technologies can best help
translators produce better translations faster. There is wide agreement
among translation scholars that expert translators solve translation
problems in a different manner than non-expert translators, but does
that also hold for machine translation postediting? And if so, how can
we assess and compare these different processes? How exactly is human
translation production different from human post-editing of MT output?
For instance, is there anything like 'post-editing expertise' which
compares to 'translation expertise'? How are these two types of
expertise different from each other?
We are also interested in
how advanced interactive CAT and MT technologies can be designed. How
can the results from translation process research be applied to produce
better automated translation aids which could better support human
translators in their work? Can a better understanding of human
translation processing help us design better CAT systems? Are there
more and better ways to deploy the translation technology than merely
post-editing machine generated translations?
The workshop will be preceded by the Second
International PhD course in Translation Process Research from
August 13 to 16.
Call for Papers:
The
workshop will be separated into a more academic research track on
Friday and a more applied business track on Saturday. We therefore
solicit all kinds of academic, research and industrial submissions,
experience reports and visionary presentations on topics related to
those mentioned above. Abstracts should be approximately 400 words and
will be published on the workshop website. A separate call for full
papers will be issued after the workshop for publication in a special
journal issue.

In 1989 José Lambert created a special research program in Translation
Studies at the University of Leuven in order to promote research
training in the study of translational phenomena and to stimulate
high-level research into the cultural functions of translation. Since
then, this unique program has attracted talented PhD students and young
scholars who spend two weeks of research under the supervision of a
team of prominent scholars, and under the supervision of the Chair
Professor, an annually appointed expert in the field of Translation
Studies. From 1989 on, the program has hosted participants from Austria
to Australia, from Brazil to Burundi, and from China to the Czech
Republic.
Basic activities and components of the Summer Session:
- Public
Lectures by the CETRA Professor on key topics. A preliminary reading
list will be furnished and all topics are to be further developed in
discussions.
- Theoretical-methodological seminars given by the
CETRA staff. Basic reading materials will be made available in advance.
- Tutorials: individual discussions of participants’
research with the CETRA Professor and the CETRA staff.
- Students’ papers: presentation of participants’
individual research projects followed by open discussion.
- Publication:
each participant is invited to submit an article based on the

Language Legitimacy and Access: How Far Have We Come towards Fostering a Multilingual South Africa after a Decade and a Half?

To
commemorate its 15th anniversary, Wits Language School is pleased to
announce its 2012 one-day conference, 'Language Legitimacy and Access:
How Far Have We Come towards Fostering a Multilingual South Africa
after a Decade and a Half?'
As the school is just one year
younger than South Africa's constitution, the conference will highlight
current trends and political concerns involved with the language areas
that WLS is engaged in, such as language teaching, teacher education,
and translation and interpreting. We will examine these areas as they
relate to South Africa's Bill of Rights on language in important
domains such as education, cultural life and the judicial system.
Although the focus of the Bill of Rights is on equity and inclusion,
access to language resources is still contestable in these contexts.
The conference will provide a space to share insights as well as to
highlight successes and areas that need improvement and advocates.
The
conference will open with a welcome address by Dr Nhlanhla Thwala,
Director of Wits Language School. Invited guest speakers include Susan
Coetzee Van Rooy, Leketi Makalela and more to be announced.

Forum on 'Y. R. Chao and Linguistics'
Hong Kong
Professor Yuan-Ren Chao (1892-1982), known as Father of Modern Chinese
Linguistics, is an unusual scholar whose dual contributions to
linguistics and to the study of Chinese language have been well
recognized both in China and worldwide, and whose influence is still
felt today. He made further important contributions to the modern study
of Chinese language, such as phonology, dialectology and grammar, as
reflected by his many seminal works including the progressive
developments from Cantonese Primer (1947) to Mandarin Primer (1948) and
then to A Grammar of Spoken Chinese (1968). He was also credited as the
first inventor of the Gwoyeu Romatzyh and the five-point scale notation
for transcribing pitch contours in Chinese dialects. Furthermore,
Professor Chao was a pioneer in many other fields. His translation of
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is still regarded as a classic; His
composition entitled jiao wo ruhe bu xiang ta 'How could I help but
think of her' remains a favori!

2012 is the 120th anniversary of Professor Chao's birth and the return
of IACL conference to Hong Kong after 18 years. To celebrate this
occasion, a one-day Forum on 'Y. R. Chao and Linguistics' will be

Procedure for submitting proposals for papers:
Those wishing to participate in the Conference are invited to submit
200-word abstracts of their proposed papers directly to all convenors
of the seminar in question before 31 January 2012.
The convenors will let the proponents know whether their proposals have
been accepted by no later than 29 February 2012.
Please note that authors of seminar papers will be expected to give an
oral presentation of not more than 15 minutes’ duration, rather than
simply reading their papers aloud. Convenors should ensure that reduced
versions of the papers are circulated among all speakers in advance of
the seminar in question. There will be a maximum of 5 papers in each
two-hour seminar session, and convenors should plan so that there is
time for discussion between speakers and with the audience.
It is possible that we may be able to extend some seminars over two
sessions, but this is very much dependent on the proposals received and
on the way the programme as a whole develops, and cannot be determined
until after all convenors have reported to the Academic Programme
Committee.

Translation, Globalization and Place
Drawing on the notion that translation is a practice carrying both
ethical and aesthetic imperatives, the seminar will explore the role of
translation and the function of translators vis-à-vis the homogenizing
challenges posed by globalization, particularly in relation to the
notion of “place”. Through the discussion of the translation of texts
and discourses as they manifest themselves in contemporary literature,
film, video installations, and other forms of artistic and cultural
representation, we will analyze how the singularities attached to
“place” (i.e. supposedly “essential” and idiosyncratic notions linked
to the identification of one’s territory, space, city, origins, roots,
identity) are imported, adopted, adapted, appropriated and reconfigured
as they cross boundaries and trespass cultural and linguistic borders.
Some issues the seminar seeks to approach include the question whether
globalization is somewhat limited to superficial and media-fuelled
representation of place copied uncritically by translation. Does
translation remove (“displace”) the particularities of place in order
to conform to the homogeneous discourse of a uniform global world or,
on the contrary, do certain translation practices insist on remarking
the existence of “difference” through place? Does translation simply
neutralize and “re-place” or does it negotiate alternatives? Finally,
do utopian, hybrid, nostalgized, idealized, nonexistent (“placeless”)
places (ultimately, what kind of places?) emerge through translation?

The aim of this interdisciplinary conference is to focus on questions
of ‘cultural translation’ in all its forms and constructs. As global
identity becomes increasingly defined by questions of communication
across languages and cultures the role of ‘translation’ becomes key in
the forging of new subjectivities.
Topics could include (although are not limited to) :
1. Adaption in literature, film
and media
2. Interplay between East Asian
nations
3. Construction of ‘East Asia’
as a theoretical/political/cultural concept
4. A focus on the interplay
between ‘East Asia’ and the ‘West’
5. Global Dissemination of East
Asian Popular Culture.

literary translation as cross-cultural tool
We would especially welcome practice-led works from artists,
translators, filmmakers and writers. Panel submissions (3-4 people) are
also very welcome.
This conference is broadly considering Mainland China, Taiwan,
Mongolia, Hong Kong, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Philippines,
Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia to be
the geographical area of focus however comparative studies are very
welcome.
There are plans for a special edition journal as a direct result of
this conference.

Translation in Non-State Cultures: New Critical Perspectives from Wales

Since the Welsh Language Act of 1993, Wales has been an officially
bilingual country, a status which is to a large extent dependent on and
linked to translation. Yet, in contrast to these political
developments, there is a lack of substantial research into the history,
role and functions of translation in Wales, as well as into how
translation-related issues are critical for an understanding of
contemporary Wales. Whereas there is considerable research on Welsh
language policies and some on translation policies and Welsh-specific
translation tools, research on translation from a cultural, historical
or theoretical perspective remains scant. This two-day conference,
which is part of an AHRC-funded Research Network at Bangor University,
will bring together researchers, translators, writers and activists who
work in and on translation in Wales and other non-state contexts, to
discuss current knowledge and future research agendas for the study of
translation away from the 'minority cultures' framework developed in
the nineties.
Call for Papers:
Potential Topics for Abstract and Panel Proposals:
Proposals are invited for individual or joint presentations or thematic
panels on translation in Wales and other non-state cultures, with no
chronological or geographical limitation. We will particularly welcome
theoretical reflections and presentations on lesser studied areas and
critical questions. We are also open to a range of formats, including
poster presentations, round tables, and project overviews, as well as
research projects from independent researchers and PhD students.
For presentations focusing on the Welsh context, work in the following
areas will be welcome:
- The role and function of translation in Wales across history
- Welsh contributions to translation theory (with particular focus on
texts written in Welsh which have rarely been discussed)
- Translation-related practices as reactions to legislated bilingualism
in Wales
- Attitudes towards translation in Wales

We are now inviting abstracts for papers and posters for the 2012
conference Explorations in Ethnography, Language and Communication. The
theme of the conference is ‘Analysis and Impact in Linguistic
Ethnography’. We invite contributions from across disciplines and
topics such as research on health, education, culture and identity, but
abstracts should provide a clear focus on what kinds of results can be
achieved with an ethnographic approach to linguistic and communicative
data. How do we interpret our data? How do our analyses add to wider
knowledge of our target disciplines? And what are the consequences and
impact outside social science research of our work?
Invited plenary speakers include Prof. Don Kulick (University of
Chicago), Prof. Marilyn Martin-Jones (University of Birmingham) and Dr.
Martha Sif Karrebæk (University of Copenhagen).
On the Thursday a series of interactive workshops will take place. On
the Friday papers and posters will be presented and discussed. Oral
presentations will be 30 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes for
discussion. Dedicated time and space will also be allocated for
discussion of posters led by invited discussants.
Abstracts (up to 300 words) should be submitted by e-mail attachment

Subtitles and Language Learning

conference’s main objective is to highlight the importance of the use
of subtitled audiovisual materials in formal teaching/learning contexts
(primary, secondary tertiary education), and in informal contexts
(individual language learning for adult learners).

research on subtitled audiovisual materials as teaching aids as well as

The languages of films
Dubbing, acquisition and methodology

focussing on the specificities of original and dubbed film dialogue,
the conference aims to offer an original contribution to research on
audiovisual translation and language learning, both descriptively and
methodologically. The conference represents the ideal conclusion of the
two-year international project English and Italian audiovisual
language: translation and language learning, funded by the
Alma
Mater Ticinensis Foundation and coordinated by the University of Pavia,
with the participation of the Universities of Malta and Loughborough.
The conference will thus be an important occasion to present the
project results and will also be an occasion to further discussions

Call for Papers:
Sektion 13: 'Medientextsorten und neue Kommunikationsformen des
Französischen. Kontrastive und translationswissenschaftliche
Perspektiven', Frankoromanistentag 2012.
Die Sektion soll sich unter sprachwissenschaftlicher Perspektive
einerseits und mit translationswissenschaftlichem Fokus andererseits
mit theoretischen und anwendungsorientierten Fragestellungen zu neuen
Kommunikationsformen und Medientextsorten des Französischen (ggf.
kontrastiv zum Deutschen) befassen.
Für den Bereich neuer Kommunikationsformen ist für das Französische ein
sowohl theoretisch-methodischer als auch empirischer Forschungsbedarf
zu konstatieren. Trotz der ständig steigenden Nutzungshäufigkeit von
Kommunikationsformen wie z.B. E-Mail, Chat, SMS oder dem Instant
Messaging fehlen sprachwissenschaftliche Systematisierungen, die es
erlauben, die unterschiedlichen Kommunikationsformen voneinander
abzugrenzen bzw. eine Binnendifferenzierung vorzunehmen. Eine weitere
Forschungslücke betrifft die Tatsache, dass der Großteil der bislang
durchgeführten Studien zu sprachlichen Besonderheiten neuer
Kommunikationsformen nicht auf größeren Datensammlungen basiert. Zudem
sind sprach- und kulturkontrastiv angelegte Studien für das
Französische weitgehend ein Desiderat.
Translationswissenschaftlicher Forschungsbedarf ergibt sich aufgrund
der medial-kommunikativen Vernetzung und damit Entgrenzung von
Medientextsorten und neuen Kommunikationsformen. So sind bislang
Translationstechnologien wie z.B. das google-Übersetzungstool, mit dem
jede beliebige Webseite automatisch übersetzt werden kann,
wissenschaftlich noch wenig erforscht. Ebenso fehlt es an
methodologisch-systematischen Untersuchungen zu Übersetzungen in
Medientextsorten wie bspw. Nachrichten- oder Dokumentarsendungen. Im
Hinblick auf den weltweiten Zugang zu ausländischen und fremdsprachigen
Nachrichtenformaten per TV und Internet und die Internationalität der
Nachrichtenberichterstattung (z.B. euronews) ist die Notwendigkeit
einer kontrastiven und übersetzungwissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit
nicht-fiktionalen audiovisuellen Medientextsorten nicht von der Hand zu
weisen. Dies bedeutet, dass die zunehmende Internationalisierung von
Medientextsorten und deren cross-mediale Verbreitung auch eine
Beschäftigung mit translationsrelevanten Aspekten des Journalismus
erforderlich macht.
Noch nicht hinreichend erforscht ist zudem das Phänomen der
Medienkonvergenz. Inwieweit werden Ereignisse mit Hilfe neuer
Kommunikationsformen wie z.B. Twitter oder SMS medial verbreitet?
Werden durch das Herausbilden neuer Kommunikationsformen bestehende
verdrängt, modifiziert oder ergänzt?
Die folgenden Fragestellungen sollen als Anregung für die
Sektionsarbeit dienen,
wobei die Vorschläge keinesfalls als exhaustiv anzusehen sind:
- Theoretische Überlegungen zur Konstituierung eines
Klassifikationsschemas neuer Kommunikationsformen: Inwieweit lassen
sich die per se polyfunktionalen Kommunikationsformen wie z.B. vom
Mobiltelefon versandte Kurznachrichten weiter differenzieren (z.B. in
private und geschäftliche SMS)?
- Vorstellen von Datensammlungen und methodische Reflexionen zur
maschinellen Verarbeitung großer Korpora des Französischen und Deutschen
- Empirische Einzelstudien zu einzelnen Kommunikationsformen des
Französischen und Deutschen (z.B. E-Mail, SMS, MMS, Twitter, Chat,
Instant Messaging, Foren oder Blogs)
- Reflexionen zum Phänomen der Medienkonvergenz: Inwieweit
unterscheiden sich Diskurse in Abhängigkeit von ihrer medialen
Realisierung in bestimmten Kommunikationsformen voneinander (z.B. die
Firmenpräsentation im Katalog vom Auftritt im Internet; die Publikation
wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse in Printform von der elektronischen
Veröffentlichung)?
- Sprach- und kulturkontrastive Ansätze: Worin liegt die Spezifik des
Sprachgebrauchs des Französischen gegenüber dem Deutschen? Anhand
welcher kontrastiv-textologischer Befunde lassen sich Aussagen zur
Kulturgeprägtheit von Medientextsorten und neuen Kommunikationsformen
festmachen?
- Mehrsprachigkeit und Sprachkontakt in Blogs und Bewertungsportalen
- Translationstechnologien in den neuen Medien

Recent Developments and Applications of Lexical-Semantic Resources

The
workshop aims to provide a forum for discussing recent developments and
applications of various kinds of lexical-semantic resources including
wordnets, ontologies, framenets, electronic dictionaries, internet
lexicons and other collaboratively built lexical semantic resources. It
is intended as follow-up to a series of thematically related events:
GSCL workshops in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and a DGfS workshop in 2006.
Lexical-semantic contents serve as valuable sources of linguistic
information for research and applications in natural language
processing. Recent years have seen different kinds of efforts to
enhance the usability of these resources. Successful attempts to
integrate and merge lexical resources have led not only to the mapping
of lexical databases of the wordnet and framenet type but also to the
creation of online dictionary networks of different sorts. Enhancing
usability also means to provide data for the human user by new
sophisticated access interfaces as well as to make these data
available for different kinds of NLP applications. In addition, with
the increase of statistical methods in linguistics, these resources
have also become more and more interesting for various research issues.
The methods to achieve this rise in functionality and usability of
lexical resources will be a major topic of the workshop.
Call for Papers:
In
general, papers on the design, construction, extension, maintenance,
merge and validation of lexical-semantic resources and their
application in linguistic research as well as natural language
processing can be submitted. Contributions reporting on ongoing
projects and initiatives to build new resources are also welcome. We
particularly encourage submissions addressing the following topics:
- Merging of different lexical-semantic resources, such as wordnets, framenets and ontologies
- Approaches and architectures for Internet lexicography, in particular for dictionary nets
- Methods to extend the functionality of lexical resources

Automatic acquisition and extension of lexical-semantic and ontological
resources by corpus-based methods or by exploiting other
machine-readable knowledge sources

for Relevance: Discourse and Translation will be held on 25-26
September 2012 in Warsaw.
The conference aims to provide a venue

A symposium to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of the
European Society for Translation Studies

The
European Society for Translation Studies was conceived during the
international conference Translation Studies - an Interdiscipline, held
at the University of Vienna in September 1992.
The celebratory
symposium Same Place, Different Times commemorates that founding
moment, while at the same time considering opportunities and challenges
for the future. Over the last twenty years, Translation Studies
programs and networks have mushroomed all over the world, even if the
institutional foothold of the interdiscipline in university settings
has often remained precarious.
Translation Studies has
undergone many turns in these two decades, and has become more
international in the process. Same Place, Different Times offers an
occasion to reflect on these developments in relation to the originary
intent of the EST as a professional organization for academics engaged
in research and teaching in any of the diverse subfield of translation
studies. Among other things, the symposium considers the “Europeanness”
of the association, which makes up its distinct quality in the
globalizing network of translation scholarship and transor
supranational organizations such as the European Union.
The
symposium will feature a poster session to showcase advances in the
field. Researchers in any sub-field of translation studies are invited
to present their work in the form of a poster. The 90-minute poster
session will offer direct access to the authors in a way not possible
through regular panels.
Researchers in an early stage of their careers are particularly
encouraged to submit a proposal.

'Languages without Borders: Plurilingualism'

Plurilingualism
does not mean the disappearance of borders, whether they are physical,
political, religious, intellectual, artistic or any others. Such as a
door, the border can be opened or closed; it is a marker of identity
and of differentiation, but at the same time, it is a condition for a
real and authentic exchange. Whatever the border, plurilingualism
transforms them as areas of exchanges, enrichment and creativity, a
creativity nurtured by an assumed and recognized otherness.
Such
is the main set of themes for the 3rd European Conference on
plurilingualism which will decline themselves into four henceforth
standard registers: education, economy, politics and culture.
Call for Papers:
The
aim of the Conference is the apprehension of concrete problems and the
search for feasible solutions to answer them. The presentation will be
presented in an argumentative manner and will include an analysis of
the situation, a presentation of the problematic, if possible supported
by experiences and precise cases, and concrete proposals to help
nurture a platform on plurilingualism.
The oral presentation
will have to be given in one of the official languages of the
conference: English, French, German and Italian. Deadline 30 November
2011.

Illegal Translation: Poetics/Politics of Translation

According
to the Unesco, “translation promotes understanding between the
people of the world and co-operation among nations.” Translation is
usually described as a form of bridging that links a “source
language” to a “target tongue,” as if the issue consisted in passing
from one shore to another. Such an image contributes to reducing
languages to mere vectors of identities. Is translation really a
way of building lines of agreement, or is it rather a way of
establishing and strengthening borders ? Languages are required
to separate what is “ours” from what is “foreign” and in doing so,
they echo and confirm national borders. The bridge metaphor
maintains reassuring and practical oppositions, also because it
conceals speech acts and discursive gaps, and tends to transform
these gaps into established theoretical objects. Given the
contemporary debates over “national identity” and the closing of
European borders, it may well be urgent to modify such a
representation of the act of translation. Translation should
perhaps not be considered as a transfer from a source language to
a target language, but rather as a new enactment of a speech act that
has previously occurred. The speech act as such makes every single
tongue insecure, be it foreign or familiar, in the sense that it
opens up a whole range of contexts, strata, faults and gaps, which make
it impossible to conceive any “tongue” as a stable and homogeneous
entity. The idea of “Illegal Translation,” as in the phrase “illegal
immigrants,” invites us to explore the most subversive aspects of
translation as they are linked to the crisis that occurs within every
identity, and that displaces the sense of identity itself. We would
like to open this international and interdisciplinary
conference to different proposals. Among the many possible
perspectives, let us mention but a few – without closing the list :
−
Historicity and translation. Translation, as a form of oblique
judgement, is in some sense always illegal. Translation is untimely
: it opens the way to transmission ; it reopens forms that have been
traditionally established and therefore accompanies their
dehiscence. Translating is always retranslating. Our aim is not to
consider a diachronic movement of translation that would result
in producing a smooth tradition or history, but rather to
localize moments in which established texts and contemporary or
re-enacted practices clash with one another. Because it implies a
form of interpretive crisis within the act of re-enactment,
translation provides a form of critical breach, which may be
considered as illegal deformation of the original, or on the
contrary as a judgmental re-formation. Both these forms,
de-formations or re-formations are likely to reveal the history of
the original, and imply a point of view, some form of judgement on
the original itself.
− How do we read a translation ? What
are the specific marks of a translated text ? It is only through
the detailed enunciation of a given text that we are likely to grasp
translation as an event. The close-reading of translations is
required to elaborate a theory that will acknowledge the fact that
translating is essentially a practical experience, a practical
re-enactment of a speech act. Writing a translation is a specific
act. To whom is the translation destined ? and how is it given as
such to the reader ? How is it possible to situate its sender ? Does
the specific sender-producer of a translation reduplicate the
initial speaker/narrator, or does s-he replace him or her ? and how
? How does the text reveal or mask the risks of usurpation contained
in translation ? How is the “difference and repetition” of
translation inscribed ? The “anthropology of texts” developed
by Karin Barber might help to address this issue. Gayatri Spivak’s
essay, Can the Subaltern Speak ? involves the question : “can the
subaltern stop translating ? And how ?”. Are linguistic policies
possible without taking into account the question of the
Untranslatable ? Events of translation are made possible by
certain circumstances – editorial programs, financial
subsidies, etc. The importance of translation usually relies on
political decisions. It may be interesting to address this issue
the other way around, and to imagine linguistic policies from a
multilingual and translational perspective ? One of the first
consequences of such a “translational turn” in the conception of
languages would be to abandon the metaphysical notion of the
“untranslatable” and to favour a pragmatic approach of idiomatic
variations and diversities within any form of language and speech
act. “Untranslatability” is perhaps the form of inner resistance that
language establishes within its own constitutive movement and
poetic variability

program provides three venues for sharing innovative ideas that promote
successful student outcomes: a) pre-conference workshops, b)
presentations and c) poster sessions. Each full day of the conference
will begin with a plenary session focusing on a designated topic
followed by selected presentations addressing one of five thematic
threads: a) pre-service teaching and learning of interpretation, b)

Voices of Suspense and their Translation in Thrillers

The International Conference "The Voices of Suspense and their
Translation in Thrillers" (VSTT) aims to study fictional dialogue and
its translation in suspense novels and films and in related genres. The
particular interest in dialogue comes from the host of roles it plays
in fiction. It helps create suspense and arouses a whole range of
feelings related to the development and dénouement of the plot in the
reader or the audience. Moreover, fictional dialogue is the discursive
method to evoke orality, confer authenticity and credibility on a plot
and give fictional characters a voice.
This conference is
part of the research project La traducción del diálogo ficcional.
Textos literarios y textos multimodales ("The translation of fictional
dialogue. Literary and multimodal texts"), TRADIF, funded by the
Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The participants in this
project study feigned orality in fictional works with regard to two
different areas: Contrastive Linguistics and Translation
Studies.
Contributions
should deal with aspects related to the translation of genres and
subgenres such as crime, horror and political fiction, as well as the
different subtypes of thrillers (political, legal, psychological,
etc.). The conference also aims to study fictional dialogue in the
different modalities of audiovisual translation, especially the dubbing
and subtitling of films, TV series, adaptations and remakes, as well as
the videogames that belong to the suspense genre.

s’inscrira dans une approche résolument linguistique : pardelà leur
exploitation (courante) en analyse du discours, il s’agira en effet
d’aborder les évènements sous leurs autres coutures linguistiques
(notamment grammaticales, morphologiques, syntaxiques, sémantiques,
logiques, cognitives ou phonétiques). Globalement, l’objectif du
colloque est de s'interroger sur le rôle (tant actif que passif) de la
langue et du langage dans la construction, la représentation et la
transmission des évènements, pour tenter d’en préciser les contours
encore flous et d’en approfondir l’étude des propriétés et/ou
spécificités linguistiques intrinsèques connues – voire d’en mettre au

En pratique, à partir du discours médiatique,
créateur d'évènement, on interrogera le moule et la matrice

Plurilingualism and the Labour Market. The Quality of Communication
Udine, Italy
The
two-day conference is organized by the Department of Modern Languages
and Literatures and the International Centre for the Study of
Plurilingualism of the University of Udine, Italy, in cooperation with
Do.Ri.F.–University, and is part of a series of initiatives organized
by Do.Ri.F on the broad theme of plurilingualism in the labour market.
Like
pluriculturalism, plurilingualism in the labour market has often been
analyzed as a cause of misunderstanding and management difficulties,
opening the way to the discipline of “intercultural management”.
However, plurilingualism is also studied as a personal and professional
resource for the European citizen (see the recent conference
“Multilingual Competences for Professional and Social Success in
Europe” organized in Warsaw in September 2011, by the presidency of the
European Council).
Plurilingual practices involve several
professionals in guaranteeing an optimal quality of communication among
company members, and between the company and its clients. On the one
hand, as a result of international migration, significant demographic
changes are altering the structure of the Italian population, notably
in the North-East (see the Italian National Institute for Statistics
ISTAT demographic indicators, 2010 and 2011). On the other hand, it is
one of the most significant features of globalization today, that
business internationalization compels communication with more and more
counterparts abroad. The emergence of “global English” or “Globish” is
one of the possible answers to these communicative needs, and its use
can intersect local languages. Linguistic and cultural perspectives in
the workplace are particularly challenging where communication and
cooperation are crucial, in activities such as human resources
management, safety and security management, and communication with
customers. Effective communication in multilingual and multicultural
contexts is of paramount importance in emergency situations, for
example in healthcare settings.
The conference will be organized
as follows: it will open on Thursday 25th with a plenary invited talk
by Georges Lüdi. On both days, a roundtable debate will be followed by
scholars’ contributions. On Thursday 25th, the first round table will
gather experts and delegates from companies such as IKEA Italia and
Wärtsilä Italia to discuss plurilingual communication in multilingual
settings. On Friday 26th, a second roundtable will feature among others
the PR officers of some hospitals and healthcare services in the
Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region. Contributors will be given 20 minutes for
presentation, followed by 10 minutes for discussion.
New research and innovative papers are solicited on, but not limited
to, the following topics:
- terminological needs and solutions for plurilingual communication in
the workplace;
- opportunities and challenges in plurilingual human resource
management;
- difficulties and proposals for the quality of communication between
companies and users.
Deadline for submission: 15th June 2012
The
languages of the Conference are Italian, French and English. A
selection of papers presented during the conference will be published
in an edited volume.

In a world that seems continuously to be pushing the envelope of what
is acceptable to the inhabitants of specific linguistic and cultural
contexts, this interdisciplinary conference acknowledges the importance
of investigating taboos and their reinforcement/breaking in various
areas of language, culture and society, and across different cultures.
We propose to explore the delicate balance and subtle boundaries
between the need for inclusion and respect for different ethnic,
religious, sexual, etc. backgrounds - which seems to be at the basis of
modern multicultural societies - and a (un)conscious push towards the
breaking of existing taboos, for example for shock value, as in the
case of humour. In such context, investigation of the linguistic,
cultural, social, institutional and personal implications of taboo
reinforcement/breaking appears of extreme value.

We welcome individual proposals or pre-organized panels from different
disciplines pertaining - but by no means limited - to the following

The aim of the conference is to both look back in history and re-assess
important moments in the development of translation studies, and to
give an overview of the situation today and the possible guidelines for
tomorrow. By giving our tribute to these two so different moments in
the history of translation, St. Jerome's translation and the creation
of the first association for machine translation, we express our
"conference policy" of inclusion and encourage contributions from
scholars in all fields in which translation and interpretation are
relevant. Thus, we expect papers from the domains of linguistics and
translation studies, literature, science, psychology, philosophy,
theology, the arts, and others.
We encourage contributions on the following themes:

Gesundheit, Wohlbefinden und Krankheit sind nicht nur medizinische
Phänomene, die naturwissenschaftlich diagnostiziert und individuell
erlebt werden, sondern sie haben auch eine kulturelle Dimension, die
auf gesellschaftlich konstruierten Systemen von Ideen und Einstellungen
beruht. Wir wollen in diesem VERBAL-Workshop der Frage nachgehen,
welche Bedeutung der Sprache in der Konstruktion, Ausgestaltung und
Tradierung dieser Systeme zukommt.
Deshalb freuen wir uns über Beiträge
- zu unterschiedlichen Diskursen und Textsorten (etwa Werbeanzeigen,
Medizinhandbüchern, Internetforen oder wissenschaftlichen Fachtexten)
- aus unterschiedlichen Epochen,
- zu verschiedenen Themen (von Physiologie bis Stressreduktion, von
Hygiene bis Rehabilitation, von Geschlechterrollen bis zur
Kommerzialisierung),
- in unterschiedlicher Domänen (etwa Medien, Unterhaltung oder
Wissenschaft) und
- mit unterschiedlichen Zugängen.
Dabei streben wir methodologische und thematische Vielfalt an: Wir
denken etwa an (Kritische) Diskursanalyse, Konversationsanalyse,
diachronen und synchronen Sprachvergleich, Lexikologie oder
Phraseologie. Der Workshop würde auch von einem möglichst weiten
Spektrum an Sprachen und anderen semiotischen Modi des untersuchten
Materials profitieren.
Der VERBAL-Workshop “Health & Language / Gesundheit &
Sprache” steht in der Tradition der von Eva Lavric begründeten
VERBAL-Workshopreihe “[X] & Language” und findet, wieder wie
bewährt geleitet von Marietta Calderón und Georg Marko, im Rahmen der
Österreichischen Linguistiktagung (ÖLT) 20012 vom 26.-28.10.2012 an der
Universität Innsbruck statt. Die Tagungsgebühr der ÖLT beträgt
voraussichtlich € 25.

Les activités de traduction et d’interprétation dans des contextes de
multilinguisme officiel ou institutionnel (où au moins deux langues
sont désignées officielles) sont le quotidien de bon nombre de pays. Or
rares sont les colloques qui permettent aux traductologues de réfléchir
sur les expériences politiques, institutionnelles et socio-culturelles
qui sont le propre de ces contextes. Alors que le thème de la
traduction dans des contextes multilingues et multiculturels a suscité
beaucoup d’intérêt dernièrement , les discussions n’ont pas eu pour
objet explicite les contextes de multilinguisme officiel ou
institutionnel.
Ce colloque souhaite fournir l’occasion de présenter les résultats de
recherches qui portent sur la spécificité de la traduction et de
l’interprétation dans des contextes de multilinguisme officiel ou
institutionnel et les « effets de traduction » (Simon 1996) qui s’y
font ressentir. Bon nombre de pays du monde sont officiellement
multilingues : l’Afghanistan (le pachtou, le dari), la Belgique (le
néerlandais, le français, l’allemand), le Cameroun et le Canada
(l’anglais, le français), la Finlande (le finnois, le suédois), l’Inde
(23 langues officielles), l’Irlande (l’irlandais, l’anglais), Israël
(l’hébreu, l’arabe), la Norvège (les deux variétés du norvégien), le
Pakistan (l’ourdou, l’anglais), les Philippines (l’anglais, le
filipino-tagalog), l’Afrique du Sud (11 langues officielles) et la
Suisse (le français, l’allemand, l’italien), entre autres pays.
Idéalement, les communications faisant partie du programme traiteront
au moins un aspect de l’interaction entre la traduction et le
multilinguisme officiel dans les pays identifiés ci-dessus de même que
dans d’autres pays.
Les propositions de communication retenues permettront aux participants
de réfléchir sur les questions suivantes : Le multilinguisme officiel
et la traduction fonctionnent-ils et interagissent-ils de la même façon
ou de façon similaire dans ces pays ? La traduction dans des contextes
de multilinguisme officiel est-elle au service de l’idéal humaniste qui
vise à créer une culture commune (Simon 1996)? Sinon, sert-elle plutôt
à renforcer les divisions culturelles en soulignant les rencontres
manquées entre les groupes socio-linguistiques qui constituent ces
contextes ? Quelles expériences et pratiques sont partagées ?
Lesquelles se distinguent des nôtres? Que pourrions-nous et
devrions-nous apprendre à partir d’expériences qui se différencient des
nôtres ? Ces questions sont parmi celles sur lesquelles nous voudrions
que les conférenciers se penchent lors du colloque.

range of views on humour and politics. The relation of humour and
politics is definitely not a straightforward one. The central question

2nd Nordic Interdisciplinary Conference on Discourse and Interaction

After
its initial successes in Aalborg, Denmark, in November 2010, NORDISCO
is emerging as a biennial event, whose goal is to create a Nordic and
Baltic forum bringing together researchers and doctoral students who
are investigating discourse and interaction from a wide range of
disciplinary perspectives. It is now our pleasure at Linköping
University, Sweden, to host NORDISCO 2012, in the hope that the second
Nordic and Baltic interdisciplinary conference will give rise to
creative synergies and facilitate new networks, crossing both
geographical and disciplinary borders.
The focus of the
conference is on the organisation, structure and constitution of text,
discourse, talk and social interaction. We therefore welcome
researchers’ contributions from different and diverse fields of
enquiry, including – but not limited to – discourse studies,
conversation analysis, discursive psychology, critical discourse
analysis, interaction analysis, rhetoric, narrative analysis, discourse
theory, political discourse analysis, social semiotics, multimodal
discourse analysis, applied linguistics, gesture studies and
communication activism, as well as approaches to discourse and
interaction to be found in sociology, political science, environmental
science, economics, media studies and cultural studies.
The
conference will consist of parallel paper sessions and four plenary
presentations by leading researchers representing different domains of
study. We are happy to be able to confirm plenaries by Anssi Peräkylä
(Helsinki), Elizabeth Lanza (Oslo), Inger Lassen (Aalborg), and Jan
Anward (Linköping). As a special pre-conference event in the morning
before the official conference, there will also be four workshops,
organised by our plenary speakers.

marks the 25th anniversary of the Australian Institute of Interpreters
and Translators Incorporated (AUSIT). Over the past 25 years, AUSIT has
made a significant contribution to improving the professional practice
of translating and interpreting in Australia. On the occasion of this
biennial conference, we aim to celebrate those achievements and build
on the successes of the past.
Proposals for individual papers,
workshops and posters are invited from both translation and
interpreting scholars and practising translators and
interpreters. Abstracts should be 250 words for individual
papers
and posters and 500 words for workshops. Presentations on all aspects
of translation and interpreting studies are welcome. However, priority
will be given to papers that address the following themes which focus
on drawing inspiration from the past for a brighter future in t

Language and Literature: Challenges in an Aliterate Age

Aliteracy,
the condition of being able to read but not doing so, is a problematic
fact in education, with particular repercussions in the teaching of
language, literature, linguistics and translation studies. This lack of
reading, with the attendant problem of delayed acquisition of necessary
vocabulary impedes understanding of course content across programs. How
then do we transfer knowledge to students who simply don't read? How do
we accommodate aliteracy within an academic setting that depends on
reading? Reading is a laborious process in a second language - how does
that affect students? How can students acquire research skills in an
age of effortless access to information? How do we teach students how
to separate the wheat from the electronic chaff? How do we engage
students without compromising quality and competition? Connected to
this is the equally troublesome emergence of electronic epistemology,
where knowledge is cut and pasted from web sources like Wikipedia. What
are the consequences of a process-free access to knowledge? Instead of
lamenting these facts, this conference is aimed at finding ways to
impart knowledge in an increasingly aliterate age, recognizing the
often difficult transition from oral-based transmission of knowledge to
literary-based transmission.
The University of Nizwa is an
emerging institution of 8,000 students dedicated to the pursuit of
excellence in higher education in the Sultanate of Oman. This
conference is centered on Foreign Language Learning, Arabic Language
Studies, English Literature, Linguistics and Translation Studies, but
is not exclusive to these areas and disciplines.

The 2011 Tunisian Revolution, the first in the 21st century and
different by many standards, is a global event. It puzzled, thrilled,
shocked and destabilised individuals, peoples and states. Its domino
effect is ongoing and its geopolitical, diplomatic, socio-economic and
military implications are still unfolding. It is changing
times, affecting interests, forcing new agendas and generating new
rules of exchange. Components of regional and international relations
are being redefined. The revolution (s) is showing concealed
vulnerabilities and fragilities here and apparently dormant and
powerful counter-hegemonic forces of change there. The revolution(s) is
undoubtedly providing people with a new sense of themselves and
status. Prevailing frames of reference and theoretical assumptions are
under pressure. There is indeed an urgent need to rethink some
explanatory frameworks and discourses.
This is an interdisciplinary conference on timely and pressing themes
which will allow the conference participants to address issues which
affect the real world today and engage with many of the already
prevailing questions, theoretical constructs and discourses.
Potential contributors are invited to submit papers on topics including
(but by no means limited to):
- The Tunisian revolution(s) capacity to break with the past and its
global character
- Its comparability to recent/past revolutions/similar events in terms
of motivations, ideologies, participants, targets, modes of action and
responses of political authorities?
- Historical, literary, discursive, sociological, political
and journalistic representations of the revolution(s)?
- The advent of a post-Tunisian revolution world?
- Tunisia/North Africa and the English-speaking world:
history of encounters, relations, prospects of change and exchange
- Alienation, exclusion, anger, protest, dissidence, fear, violence,
political action
- Gender : roles and politicisation
- Identities
- Reflections on language, culture and literature in times of
revolutions.
We are interested in receiving abstracts for twenty-minute papers in
the areas of history, cultural studies, literature, sociology,
philosophy, comparative studies and politics amongst others.

Abstracts should be 250-300 words long and include affiliation and a

Spoken Language in a Multimodal Context

The workshop on 'The Spoken Language in a Multimodal Context.
Description, Teaching, Translation' of the International Doctoral
School 'Culture, education and communication' will take place on 10 and
11 December 2012 at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain).
Among the participants will be the eight member universities of EDI:
Roma Tre (Italy), Foggia (Italy), Potsdam (Germany), Louvain la Neuve
(Belgium), Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona, Italy), Paris Ouest
Nanterre La Défense (France), Université d'Avignon et des Pays de
Vaucluse (France) and UPF (Barcelona, Spain). In line with its raison
d'être, the EDI offers the opportunity of getting to know the other
doctoral candidates and of a fruitful exchange of ideas.
The 2012 edition of the workshop will bring together about thirty
doctoral candidates, who are working in the field of Linguistics,
Information and Communication, Translation, Philosophy, Education,
Psychology, Museology, Arts and Cinema.
The aim of the workshop is to help the doctoral candidates in
presenting a clear abstract of their thesis work regarding elaboration,
oral presentation and constructive debates with other participants; in
a language other than their mother tongue.
It is suggested that the presentations focus on the spoken language in
the following areas of fiction and non-fiction, considering the
multimodal conditions of the genres:
- Audiovisual genres, audiovisual narration, audiovisual translation,
audio description
- Comics and graphic novels and translation
- Picture books and cinema for children and translation
- Literature, in particular, narratives and the adaption of literary
works to other modes and in other areas (comics, movies, children
books, didactic material, etc.)
- Sign language and sign language interpretation
- Journalistic texts and translation
- Web pages and translation
- Audio guides, museum pedagogy and didactics, the distribution
object-text (spoken word), staging of the object
- Learning and teaching of first and second languages in a multimodal
context
- e-learning and spoken language
- Interactive learning, spoken language and multimodality
Semiotic approaches to multimodality will be welcomed and the
description of socio-pragmatic and cultural, psychological, pedagogical
and didactical as well as linguistic and translational aspects.

what is the problem?
Translating
figurative language invariably implies translating the culture which
produced that language, if we allow that any language-culture lives by
its metaphors (Bildfeld in Weinrich’s terms) and that those metaphors
are far from being universal. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) convincingly
argue that our linguistic metaphors are often the byproduct of a deeper
analogical mental structure, which allows us to know and define the
world around us in terms of what we know better.
The conference
is open to all language pairs and to various approaches to the issue:
be they linguistic and/or literary, cognitive and/or stylistic,
interdisciplinary, corpus-based, etc. Proposals dealing with
statistical translation software and/or translation memories are also
of interest. We welcome theoretical and/or case studies, focusing on
the translation of different registers/ genres: from literature to
politics, from advertising to science, from jokes to films, and so on.
Proposals
for papers are invited for consideration and should be submitted no
later than 15 April 2012. The conference languages are English and
Italian. We foresee each presenter having a 30 minute slot: 20 minutes
for the presentation + 10 minutes for discussion.

Writing Chinese Translation History: Fifth Young Researchers'
Conference on Chinese Translation Studies

With the aim to encourage young scholars to actively participate in
Chinese translation studies and strengthen academic exchange, the
Research Centre for Translation (RCT) of The Chinese University of Hong
Kong has organized a biennial Young Researchers' Conference on Chinese
Translation Studies since 2004.
We are now calling applications for the Fifth Young Researchers'
Conference in 2012. Theme: "Writing Chinese Translation History",
